As you may or may not be aware, this Sunday (the 26th of April) marks a momentous occasion for pretzel lovers all over the globe: it’s National Pretzel Day! Which is basically a day to celebrate our FAVOURITE thing.

A pretzel perfect story

Even though we can all agree that there’s nothing better than a freshly baked pretzel- not many people actually know the story behind the snack. Well, don’t fear! We are here to teach you all about the tasty treat.

Our story starts in Italy, 610 AD- yes, really, pretzels have been popular for that long! A monk used to serve ‘Pretiola’ (aka pretzels) as a reward to children who remembered their prayers. Rumour is that the monk shaped the pretzels to look like a child crossing its arms in prayer.

Then, over the next few hundred years, popularity of the Pretiola spread throughout Europe: travelling through Italy, France, Austria and settling in Germany- where the Pretiola became known as the ‘Pretzel’.

Pretzels were first taken to America by German immigrants, who set up bakeries in Pennsylvania. As we know, Pennsylvania was also where Auntie Anne’s first started! ‘Auntie’ Anne Beiler bought her market stand back in 1988 where she sold the original pretzel and homemade lemonade.

Then, in 2003, Auntie Anne’s came to the UK where we opened our store in Cheltenham. We now own over 30 stores in the UK and are always planning to expand to new towns and cities!
